Overview[]
General Hogwald needs no further introduction. To many Dwarves he is known as a master inventor and artisan of technology, and to just as many he is known as the madman who armed the tyrant, King Mordegald, with an arsenal of advanced machinery to continue his oppression of his people; including the dreaded Megatank.
Lore[]
Early life
Hogwald and his younger brother, Arwald, came from nothing and owned nothing but the clothes on their back. Not even Hogwald himself is sure of from where they came as the earliest memory he has is of him and his brother scavenging the alleyways of the cities for survival. And though they didn’t own a nugget between them, they both possessed a keen sense of technological prowess. Scrounging together whatever resources and spare parts they could muster they soon made themselves a small fortune by selling automated trinkets.
With their newly acquired wealth they founded a workshop on the slopes of the Malakas Peak, which would usher in a new generation of promising Dwarven craftsmen. From there their fame grew, and rumors began to spread of the two “miracle brothers” who were always on the verge of technological breakthroughs for the entirety of the Dwarven kingom. And there were some truths to those stories, as Hogwald and Arwald constantly made improvements to the modern technology and drew new schematics for inventions that would soon see the light of day.
Hogwald’s choice
The innovations in their field soon gained the recognition of King Mordegald, who further funded the enterprise of the two brothers to continue their technological development for the benefit of the entire realm. Though the king wasn’t quite content with only technologically improving the comforts of everyday life. He wanted to use the two brothers’ ingenuity to develop a new arsenal for his armies, granting the Dwarven military many new powerful machinations.
Though Arwald remained wary of the king’s intent, Hogwald was momentarily blinded by the sudden fame and wealth; something neither of them had had before. Though friction began to grow between the two, the brothers remained dedicated to their work, even if their intentions were divided. Arwald worked diligently, hoping that the end result of their work might end up serving some good in the long run, whereas Hogwald worked eagerly with the promises of grandeur and visions of the two mentioned in the annals of historical inventors.
But as the two brothers were trying out one of their newest inventions in the distant Raven Tooth Mine, something went horribly awry with the machine, causing an explosion which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of miners and Arwald.
From that day onward Hogwald would begin to drink himself into a lonely stupor, blaming himself for the death of his brother, while constantly pondering upon the reason as to why the accident had occurred. Chilling rumors would eventually emerge which suggested that the accident was in fact sabotage staged by the king’s men. The purpose would have been to prevent the mine from falling into the hands of a rebel forces dedicated to overthrow the tyrant.
Hogwald would fall into a bitter resentment of his work for the king, viewing his own craft as responsible for not only the death of his brother, but also the continued oppression of the entire Dwarven kingdom. Hogwald then set his workshop ablaze and fled into the subterranean tunnels with a group of loyal engineers and a trove of unfinished schematics.
Present day
While Hogwald would deny being a madman, he cannot escape his blemished conscience of having unwittingly aided the king’s oppressive regime with his inventions. Now overcome with grief, guilt, and bitter rage, Hogwald has decided to right his wrongdoings by creating new machinery that will surpass those bearing his own signature still in the service of the tyrant. And hopefully, by doing so, still the ghost of his late brother.
Though no experienced warrior, Hogwald’s dedication and profound knowledge of military technology, has earned him the affectionate title of “General-Engineer” among his loyal followers of inventors and engineers, as they together strive to overthrow Mordegald’s bloody regime, once and for all.
